Healthy Over Hungry Cereal Drive from May 29 to June 5
Because Hunger Doesn’t Take a Summer Vacation
Dallas – May 26, 2015 – Doctors Hospital at White Rock Lake is leading a community effort to provide area children struggling with hunger with a healthy breakfast during the summer through its Healthy Over Hungry Cereal Drive benefitting the North Texas Food Bank, a member of the Feeding America network. The drive kicks off Friday, May 29 and runs through Friday, June 5.
“At Doctors Hospital at White Rock Lake, we recognize hunger exists in every city in America, and our staff is eager to join the fight against hunger and make a difference in our community,” said Jay Krishnaswamy, chief executive officer of Doctors Hospital at White Rock Lake. “We are proud to support the North Texas Food Bank with a cereal drive to help those struggling with food insecurity.”
According to the North Texas Food Bank (NTFB), one in every 4 children in North Texas is food insecure (304,000 children). Only 9% of the individuals that we serve are homeless. It is not just the unemployed which we all hear about, but the under-employed; 95% of households served by the NTFB have an annual household income of $30,000 or less.
Whole-grain cereal, when part of a healthy, balanced breakfast including dairy, fruit and lean protein, is a popular food item that experts say can easily address the hunger gap during the summer months when children are not in school. Healthy cereal contains one serving of whole grain, no more than 200 calories per serving, six grams or less of sugar and at least three grams of fiber per serving. It should also be free of artificial colors and dyes.
