From Amanda Chase,
Assistant City Attorney and Northeast Community Prosecutor
Good afternoon, friends,
As you may have heard, we have filed legislation that could improve the ability of police to enforce violations of disabled parking. As the law currently stands, we are prevented from effectively enforcing against violations of disabled parking.
The proposed legislation helps police enforce violations of disabled parking with a civil citation option. In the case where we cannot identify the person who committed the offense, as required in criminal cases, officers and volunteers would have the option to write a civil citation under the Transportation Code under this proposed legislation. If we can identify the offender personally, the criminal citation option is still available.
We support State Representative Linda Koop in her legislation, House Bill 1721, which would hold people civilly liable if they park illegally in a space designated for persons with disabilities. http://housebill1721.wix.com/housebill1721
We would love your support, if possible. Go to the website and provide your information. http://housebill1721.wix.com/housebill1721 If you have the opportunity to share this information with your community contacts, we may be able to raise awareness of this problem in the legislature and change the law to better protect our disabled friends, family members and neighbors.
Most sincerely,
Amanda Chase
